GENERAL DESCRIPTION:



The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is an agency committed to providing a safe, high quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming and is currently seeking a Design Assistant for the Laramie Design team.


The purpose of the Laramie Design Team is to provide a work-study program for undergraduate engineering students interested in continuing their education, while simultaneously working part- time on a highway design team. Students in the Design Team are provided with training in the fundamental principles and techniques of highway design and with actual design experience, and are encouraged to continue their employment with the Wyoming Department of Transportation upon graduation.


This is a Part-time position.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.








+ Prepares plan drawings and details for highway construction plans utilizing computer aided design and drafting (CADD) software.

+ Learns to use the current WYDOT CADD software, WYDOT procedures, and basic drafting requirements to produce drawings and details with extensive formal and on-the-job training.

+ Prints and reproduces plan drawings, as required for distribution and peer review.

+ Researches As-Constructed Plans.

+ Maintains a filing system within the work area for all projects plans.

+ Incorporates some summary work as required to help a designer meet a project deadline.

+ Participates in training on various computer software related to performing this function.

+ Maintains familiarization with department policies and procedures relative to drafting or roadway plans and other areas in general.

+ Identifies and resolves problems by gathering or reviewing information gathered by others and analyzing and resolving the problem or recommending the solution to the supervisor.















Qualifications





PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:




This is an entry level position requiring no prior training or experience.


Preference may be given to those students with a minimum of 30 semester hours in the field of engineering.



**The offer of employment to selected candidate is contingent upon enrollment in the College of Engineering at the University of Wyoming for the Fall 2018 Semester.



KNOWLEDGE:







+ Knowledge of basic math, reading and writing.

+ Knowledge of communication and time management.

+ Knowledge of applying drafting skills in developing plan detail sheet(s) that will eventually be compiled to complete a set of contract document plans.






MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:





Education:


High School Diploma



PLUS



Experience:


0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Transportation occupational group)



OR



Education & Experience Substitution:


0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Transportation occupational group)

Necessary Special Requirements






PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:







+ Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time.

+ May work in adverse environmental conditions.

+ May work in close proximity to high speed traffic.
